The National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, has doubled the amount of waste that it sends to be recycled and not to landfill in just two years with the assistance of Landfill Alternatives.
The increase from 19% in 2008 to over 40% in 2010, has been largely due to the introduction of the NEC’s Waste Pre-Treatment Centre, which allows waste to be separated and treated prior to being collected by local suppliers to the recycling industry.
The LFA HB 1, processes cardboard, plastic, metal, wood, paper, and cans in a special warehouse unit previously used for catering.
The material is brought from the halls using wheelie bins which are pulled in a line by an electric vehicle. Two LFA BL 1100Ltr (Bin Lift) weigh their contents and then invert the bins over a wall, where the material is then sorted manually. The segregated material is then collected by a bob-cat with a bucket and then tipped into the hopper of the baler.
Every year across the NEC Site, we generate around 3,000 tonnes of waste as a result of the 214 events that we hold, both at The NEC and the LG Arena. As a leader in our markets, we have a responsibility to reduce our environmental impact and carbon footprint and have committed to recycling 50% of all waste generated on site by 2012. While we were previously recycling around 15% of waste generated on our site, through the Waste Pre-Treatment Centre, we are not only dramatically reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill but are also bringing down the number of vehicles needed to transport it from the NEC site, and the distance they have to travel. This has a positive impact on our carbon footprint and brings us closer to our CO2 reduction targets. In the last year, the Waste Pre-Treatment Centre has contributed to The NEC Group diverting 992 tonnes of waste from landfill to be recycled, equating to a financial saving of £47,600, and a carbon saving of 406 tonnes of CO2. We are grateful to Landfill Alternatives for their advice in specifying the equipment and the installations.
